Pomegranate: A Single Solution Against Multiple Diseases. Why It Is Considered a Universal Remedy

Currently, pomegranates are becoming more accessible and affordable for a wide range of consumers. Recently, an extensive scientific review was published dedicated to their beneficial properties.

This review was published in the reputable journal Nutrients and focuses on the effects of this fruit on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions are combined into one "bouquet" of diseases that can lead to cardiovascular pathologies such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Pomegranate Against a Whole "Bouquet of Diseases"

Research shows that pomegranate can positively influence all these diseases in various ways. Firstly, it helps prevent metabolic disorders such as elevated blood sugar levels. This, in turn, hinders the development of diabetes and supports health in the presence of an existing disease.

Secondly, pomegranate lowers lipid (fat) and cholesterol levels in the blood, which protects against atherosclerosis and related diseases. It acts effectively by reducing levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing levels of good cholesterol (HDL).

These effects have been confirmed in various studies and are primarily associated with the influence of polyphenols, which are abundant in pomegranate. It also contains many other natural antioxidants that have therapeutic and preventive effects. Therefore, pomegranate and its juice are classified as superfoods—especially beneficial products.

Lowering Blood Pressure

The antioxidants found in pomegranate contribute to increased vascular elasticity, leading to reduced blood pressure. This was proven several years ago in patients with arterial hypertension. Pomegranate juice lowered their systolic pressure by 5 mm Hg and diastolic pressure by 2 mm Hg. Moreover, the effect was observed even at small doses—50-100 ml.

"Our study confirms the significant impact of pomegranate juice consumption on blood pressure," the researchers concluded. "Therefore, it is reasonable to include it in a heart-healthy diet."

Additionally, other beneficial effects of antioxidants should be noted—anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating, and anticancer actions.
