International Chocolate Candy Day: How to Choose Sweets Properly

Chocolate candies have remained one of the most popular sweets for many years. On December 28, many countries celebrate a holiday — Chocolate Candy Day.

The history of chocolate candies began in the 18th century when Europeans mastered the process of obtaining a fatty base from cocoa beans, which hardened upon cooling. It was from this base that the first chocolate and chocolate candies were created. The process was labor-intensive, and each chocolatier kept their secrets, making such products quite expensive. At that time, chocolate candies were considered the perfect gift for any celebration, and this opinion remains today, although production has significantly simplified, and the variety of chocolate candies numbers in the hundreds.

It is no surprise that chocolate candies continue to be a favorite dessert for both children and adults, and they are often given as a sign of attention.

To ensure that the gift is not only beautiful but also useful, epidemiologist Nadezhda Raevaya shared recommendations for choosing candies.

“Among the gift sets of candies that have passed inspection, it is rare to find low-quality ones. The main complaints are related to insufficient information about the product or the lack of individual packaging for toys added to candy sets. The manufacturer is required to provide consumers with information about the product's composition and indicate on the label the presence of allergens — such as alcohol, spicy spices, peanuts, apricot kernel, or coffee,” notes Nadezhda Raevaya.

She advises against purchasing sweets from street vendors. In such unauthorized points of sale, there is a risk of buying candies that have been improperly stored or are past their expiration date.

“Chocolate should be stored at a temperature between 6 and 20 degrees. Street conditions do not meet these requirements, and it may become 'gray' or melt. It is best for children to assemble a gift themselves from their favorite and safe types of sweets,” explains Nadezhda Raevaya.
