Tamales and Cotechino: New Year Dishes from Different Countries

Preparing for the New Year celebration is not only our tradition. Let's find out what treats are served on the festive table in various corners of the world.

In Mexico, the traditional New Year dish is tamales — dumplings made from corn flour with various fillings, including cheese, fruits, berries, and meat. They are steamed, wrapped in banana or corn leaves.

In Italy, cotechino is prepared for New Year — a sausage in a natural casing made from pork mince and various spices. Cotechino is usually served with lentils, which symbolize financial prosperity.

Japanese people eat long toshikoshi-soba noodles during the holidays, which are considered a symbol of the transition from the old year to the new one.

In many countries, roasted goose is served on the New Year's table. In Denmark, it is stuffed with dried fruits, and dumplings with apple puree and red cabbage are served alongside the goose. The side dish can also be potatoes fried in oil with sugar.

The British traditionally prepare pudding with various additions, among which you can find breadcrumbs, lard, and beer. Before serving, the dish is poured with rum and set on fire.

Moussaka, a casserole made of vegetables, meat, and spices, is popular in Bulgaria, Greece, and the Balkans. Another traditional Bulgarian dish is stuffed cabbage rolls wrapped in salted cabbage leaves and a large pie made of puff pastry with a filling of feta cheese.

The Irish New Year table is characterized by its calorie content: roasted duck, goose, or turkey is served with a side of potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and cranberry sauce. Fruit pies and a Christmas cake with almond glaze and whiskey soaking are also prepared.

In Australia, New Year is celebrated in summer, so festive dishes are light and low-calorie: shrimp, fish, salads, and cherries, which are in season.
