Stomach rumbling is a fairly common symptom that almost everyone encounters at least once in their life. Often, it goes unnoticed as it does not occur very frequently. However, some may experience significant discomfort from it. Elena Yakusheva, a gastroenterologist, explained what this sign may mean and what factors contribute to its appearance.
The sound of rumbling in the stomach usually occurs when a person is hungry. It is the stomach's reaction to the absence of food — when there is no food to digest. This phenomenon is considered normal and does not cause concern among doctors. Additionally, rumbling may be associated with the passage of food through the intestines.
Which foods can cause it?
Rumbling can also be physiological if it occurs after consuming certain foods. These include:
various vegetables and fruits — cabbage, apples, grapes;
legumes — containing oligosaccharides that are not fully digested, complex carbohydrates reach the intestines and become food for bacteria, and during the breakdown of oligosaccharides, gases are produced that cause rumbling;
dairy products — most often the cause is lactose intolerance: milk, passing through the intestines, draws in water, leading to gas formation and discomfort;
cheeses — the reason is similar to that of milk;
fresh bread — the cause lies in the presence of gluten and possible enzyme deficiency for its digestion.
Moreover, stomach rumbling can be a reaction to stress. This occurs due to the presence of nerve receptors in the digestive system, leading to gas formation, and their movement causes rumbling.
Normal or pathological?
It is important to pay attention to the frequency of this condition. If it occurs infrequently and is related to stress or diet, it is considered normal. However, if rumbling becomes regular and is accompanied by symptoms such as bubbling, bloating, it is necessary to consult a gastroenterologist for examination — tests, ultrasound, and if necessary — gastroscopy. A complete list of necessary examinations will be determined by the specialist during the appointment.
Pathological causes
Rumbling in the stomach can be caused by various pathological factors. The main issues leading to such a symptom include:
gastritis;
ulcers;
pathologies of the liver, intestines, and other organs of the digestive system.
To establish the exact cause and begin treatment, it is essential to undergo examination. If the cause is physiological, it is sufficient to adjust the diet; if it is pathological, treatment of the underlying disease and monitoring of it will be required. Ignoring such a symptom when it occurs frequently should not be done.
