Optimal Products for Strengthening the Immune System, Normalizing Intestinal Function, and Combating Depression

The benefits of so-called fermented products have long been recognized not only by specialists in the fields of dietetics and medicine but also by consumers themselves, who have experienced their effectiveness firsthand. However, the list of advantages of these products continues to grow.

 

Fermented products are formed under the influence of food bacteria, which gives them new flavors and beneficial properties. Such products include pickled vegetables and dairy products. Thanks to the lactic acid bacteria (lactobacilli) contained in these products, a healthy intestinal microflora is maintained, which in turn helps strengthen the immune system and prevent various diseases.

To these beneficial therapeutic and preventive properties, scientists from the University of Virginia (USA) added another — protection against stress and depressive states. Since sauerkraut and yogurts are the most common fermented products, the researchers used them in an experiment with laboratory mice.

During the study, the authors examined the effect of probiotic bacteria — lactobacilli on the animals' bodies. The results showed that they positively influence the immune mediator gamma-interferon, which is responsible for the body's response to stress, thereby preventing the development of depression.

The scientists hope that the results of their work will not only expand the list of benefits of fermented foods but also find practical applications. This data may be useful for creating a special diet rich in pickled vegetables and dairy products for the prevention and treatment of various mental disorders.
