Researchers Identify the Most Appetizing Food in the World: It's Not a Hamburger and Not Even Shashlik

There is an opinion, especially among nutrition specialists, that the tastier the food, the less healthy it is. But is this really the case? What food do people find most appealing was determined by scientists during their experiment.

In an attempt to identify the most delicious food on the planet, British researchers from the University of Bristol conducted an extensive experiment involving 224 volunteers. The participants were divided into three groups.

In the first group, the subjects were asked to choose from four categories of food: unprocessed, minimally processed, processed, and ultra-processed. The first type includes fruits and vegetables, the second includes mushrooms, the third includes various canned goods, and the fourth option is represented by fast food and ice cream.

Participants in the second group chose between fatty and carbohydrate-rich foods, as well as foods with equal amounts of these nutrients. The third group had more freedom: they could choose food at their discretion – low-calorie, moderately calorie, high-calorie, or very high-calorie.

All participants in the experiment were presented with screens displaying images of various dishes. The researchers asked the volunteers to indicate which ones they would prefer to try. A comparative analysis of the collected data allowed the researchers to determine the winner.

The most desirable dishes for the participants turned out to be those with equal amounts of fats and carbohydrates. These options significantly outperformed the expected favorites – ultra-processed and processed foods. High calorie content also did not prove to be a decisive factor in the choice of dishes. The results of the experiment were published in the journal Appetite.
