One Against All. Doctor Claims Pomegranate Can Treat Numerous Diseases

Currently, there is a short period when pomegranates become relatively inexpensive and accessible to many. Recently, an extensive scientific review was published regarding their beneficial properties.

The review was published in the reputable journal Nutrients and focuses on the effects of this fruit on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions are combined into one "bouquet" of diseases that also lead to cardiovascular problems — hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Pomegranate Against a Whole "Bouquet of Diseases"

Studies show that pomegranate can have a diverse positive impact on all these ailments. Firstly, it prevents metabolic disorders, such as elevated blood sugar levels. This, in turn, helps prevent diabetes and assists with existing conditions.

Secondly, pomegranate lowers lipid (fat) and cholesterol levels in the blood, protecting against atherosclerosis and related diseases. It works effectively: reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing good cholesterol (HDL).

These results have been confirmed in various experiments and are primarily associated with the effects of polyphenols, which are abundant in pomegranate. It also contains many other natural antioxidants with healing and preventive properties. Therefore, pomegranate and its juice are classified as superfoods — particularly beneficial products.

It Also Lowers Blood Pressure

Pomegranate contains antioxidants that make blood vessels more elastic, contributing to lower blood pressure. This has been confirmed in studies involving patients suffering from arterial hypertension. Pomegranate juice reduced their systolic blood pressure by 5 mm Hg and diastolic pressure by 2 mm Hg. Moreover, the effect was observed even with small doses — 50-100 ml.

"Our study confirms the significant impact of pomegranate juice consumption on blood pressure," the researchers concluded. "Therefore, it is reasonable to include it in a heart-healthy diet."

Additionally, one should consider other beneficial properties of antioxidants — anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating, and anti-cancer effects.

What Can Replace Pomegranate

"Pomegranate is indeed very beneficial," notes therapist and gastroenterologist, PhD Konstantin Spakhov. "If possible, try to consume it regularly. Unfortunately, due to its high price, it is not accessible to everyone. But now, in season, it is possible. In terms of antioxidant content, pomegranate is comparable to berries, which are also very rich in them. When the price of pomegranate rises, it can be replaced with frozen berries. It is recommended to consume at least half a cup of pomegranate seeds or berries daily — this is a very healthy habit.

Pomegranate fruits are practically waste-free. Do not throw away the peel and membranes; instead, dry them. By brewing them with boiling water, you will get an excellent remedy for diarrhea. Their binding effect is comparable to that of medicinal preparations.

Many believe that since pomegranate is red, it contains a lot of iron and is excellent for increasing hemoglobin levels. This is a misconception. Iron is better obtained from animal products — meat and especially liver. There is not much iron in pomegranate, and its color is given by beneficial polyphenols.
