Expert Explained Why You Shouldn’t Buy Spices in Bulk

Spices are often sold in bulk at markets. Associate Professor of the Department of Food Industry, Hospitality Business, and Service Dmitry Bystrov explained why purchasing seasonings in this format can be unsafe.

Dmitry Bystrov emphasizes that, firstly, factory-packaged spices undergo all necessary sanitary checks and quality control during production. Such packaging is free from dust, harmful impurities, and accidentally introduced insects. It is also important to have clear expiration dates.

“Secondly, it should be remembered that spices have the ability to absorb odors. It is necessary to consider that next to the spice stall at the market, there may be, for example, fish stands, which can negatively affect the aroma of the seasonings. Undoubtedly, airtight packaging will help avoid this,” notes scientist Dmitry Bystrov.

He also adds that bulk spices may look more attractive, but such a purchase can be unsafe.

Dmitry Bystrov is confident that factory packaging will not only protect spices from foreign odors but also preserve their properties. In open access, plant additives can lose valuable taste, aroma, and color. The scientist recommends choosing spices in airtight packaging that ensures proper storage conditions.
