When it comes to the benefits of seafood, many immediately think of shrimp. They are indeed rich in valuable proteins that positively affect the body. However, on store shelves, one can find a seafood delicacy that significantly surpasses many seafood options and even meat in terms of health benefits. Nutritionist Ekaterina Stasyuk named the mollusk that is especially beneficial for the nervous system and thyroid gland.
“Sea scallops rank at the top among seafood for their vitamin B12 content. Regular consumption helps lower 'bad' cholesterol levels and normalizes the functioning of the nervous system,” noted the expert.
According to the nutritionist, 100 g of scallops contain 100 times more iodine than veal. This indicates that this seafood delicacy positively affects the functioning of the thyroid gland.
“One of the main advantages of the mollusk is its excellent taste and low calorie content. There are only 88 kcal in 100 g of the product. Additionally, scallops are low in fat and are perfect for those looking to lose weight,” emphasized Stasyuk.
The specialist warns that people with elevated levels of phosphorus and calcium in the blood, as well as those with hyperfunction of the thyroid gland, should not overindulge in this seafood delicacy.
