A bottle of whiskey sold for £2.1 million. What is behind such a price?

The 1926 Macallan whiskey bottle, titled "the most valuable whiskey in the world," was sold for a record £2.1 million at a Sotheby's auction.

It was expected that the unique bottle would fetch between £750,000 and £1.2 million, however, it surpassed all forecasts, reaching a total of £2,187,500. This sale also set a "new record for any bottles of spirits or wine sold at auction."

Why such a high price?

The reason lies in the fact that only 40 bottles of The 1926 Macallan were bottled in 1986, which were aged in sherry casks for 60 years. This long aging imparts a unique color to the drink.

“I tasted just a little. It’s very rich, with a lot of dried fruits, as expected, a lot of spices and woody notes,” shared his impressions Johnny Fowle, head of the spirits department at Sotheby’s.

Before the auction, the bottle was restored at the factory: the cork was replaced and the corners of the label, created by Italian artist Valerio Adami, were reinforced with glue.
