In Latvia, there has already been a second case of a child's death in the water in recent days. A 16-year-old teenager drowned in a quarry in the Grobina municipality.
In Latvia, another tragedy on the water occurred in recent days — a 16-year-old teenager died in a quarry in the Grobina municipality. This was reported by the LETA agency.
According to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD), a report about a drowning person was received on Thursday shortly before 14:00.
By the time rescuers arrived, the person was no longer visible on the surface of the water. Divers searched the water body and also used rescue equipment and a drone for aerial searching. Later, the teenager's body was found and brought to shore.
According to the service, since the beginning of the swimming season on May 15, 16 bodies have already been recovered from water bodies in the country. Half of these cases occurred during the holiday weekend. Earlier, it was reported about the death of a boy born in 2011 in the Gauja River in Valmiera, as well as a teenager born in 2007 who drowned in a pond in the Grundzāle municipality of Smiltene district.
Rescuers warn that in hot weather conditions, the risk of incidents on the water significantly increases. Among the main causes of tragedies are the overestimation of one's abilities, attempts to swim across water bodies, swimming in unfamiliar places, or being under the influence of alcohol.
VUGD urges choosing only equipped swimming areas, not leaving children unattended, and exercising caution near water.
