During the five-day weekend of Jāņi, eight people drowned in Latvia, reported on Thursday by Ivars Nakurt's, Deputy Chief of the State Fire and Rescue Service, to TV3.
The weekend turned out to be tragic, assessed the situation by a representative of the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPRS).
Nakurt's sadly stated that around 100 people drown in Latvia every year. In about two-thirds of cases, the cause of drowning is alcohol consumption.
The GPRS representative noted that people drown in all possible places - in the sea, in rivers, in backyard ponds, and in other seemingly familiar swimming spots.
