U.S. President Donald Trump has commented for the first time on the candidacy of former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who may become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following Keir Starmer's announcement of his resignation.
This is reported by The Guardian.
During a press conference in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump described Burnham as "extremely liberal." The American president suggested that Starmer's successor would not open the North Sea for oil extraction, which Trump has long been urging the British government to do.
"I’ve heard he’s extremely liberal, extremely, and that means he probably won’t open the North Sea," Trump said.
When asked what he knows about Burnham, the American president replied that he heard, "that he apparently was the mayor of some city."
At the press conference, Trump once again criticized NATO allies, particularly London, stating that "Britain is dying."
The next British prime minister is expected to face difficult relations with the U.S. president. Previously, Burnham criticized Trump, calling American politics "polarized" and "toxic" during a campaign event in Makerfield this month.
Recall that on June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that his time in office had come to an end.
He announced his resignation after the results of the by-election in the Makerfield constituency were revealed, in which Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won. This victory strengthened his position in the race for the leadership of the Labour Party and, consequently, for the position of prime minister of the country.
