Two people drowned in Latvia on Ligo day, reported the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPRS).
Yesterday at around 15:30, a call was received in the Penkule parish of Dobele municipality, where a person went swimming and went missing. After searching the water body, rescuers found the person, but he was already dead.
Shortly before midnight, a call was received in the Grundzāle parish of Smiltene municipality, where a person was drowning in a pond. Even before the arrival of the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPRS), the person was pulled from the water, but in this case, it was also not possible to save his life.
In Jāņi night around 2 a.m., a call was received in Rēzekne, where an apartment of 20 square meters on the first floor of a three-story residential building was on fire, and a person died in the fire. Firefighters, using rescue masks, saved three people, one of whom was injured and handed over to medics, while two people evacuated from the building before the arrival of the GPRS.
Yesterday, firefighters also responded to calls where a shed, transformer, inter-floor ceiling in a residential building, uninhabited house, dry grass, pile of branches, reeds, bushes, in two cases - garden houses, a passenger car, a table, and in several cases - garbage were on fire.
In total, over the past 24 hours, the GPRS received 96 calls, including 29 for fire extinguishing and 18 for rescue operations, while 49 calls were false.
