Last week, during the ROADPOL "Speed Control Week" campaign, the State Police recorded a number of serious speed violations, including cases where the permitted speed in populated areas was exceeded by more than 60 km/h — for these violations, the drivers were also stripped of their driving licenses.
In recent days, employees of the Special Tasks Department of the Road Traffic Safety Bureau of the State Police have identified several serious speed violations in Riga. On the evening of April 13, two incidents were recorded on Kārļa Ulmaņa gatve: in one case, the driver of a Porsche was traveling at a speed of 168 km/h in a zone where the limit is 90 km/h. In the second case, on the same stretch, the driver of a Mitsubishi was driving at a speed of 163 km/h. Fines of 1400 and 1050 euros were imposed for these violations, respectively, and in both cases, the drivers had their licenses revoked — the Porsche driver for 12 months and the Mitsubishi driver for nine months.
On April 14, a BMW driver was recorded on Krasta Street in Riga, traveling at a speed of 125 km/h in a populated area where the limit is 50 km/h. Upon stopping, it was discovered that in addition to speeding, he was driving without a valid driver's license. He was fined 1500 euros for speeding and banned from obtaining a driver's license for 12 months, and an additional fine of 300 euros was imposed for driving without a license.
On the same day, another BMW driver was detected on Vienības gatve, traveling at a speed of 115 km/h where the limit is 50 km/h. Additionally, on Kārļa Ulmaņa gatve, a BMW driver was recorded driving at 117 km/h where the limit is also 50 km/h. Both drivers were fined 1040 euros and had their driver's licenses revoked for nine months.
The State Police reminds that exceeding the permitted speed significantly increases the risk of traffic accidents and the severity of their consequences, urging drivers to adhere to traffic rules and choose a safe speed.
