A mass shooting occurred in one of the townships of South African Johannesburg, resulting in at least 12 fatalities. Nine others were injured. The police have launched a large-scale operation to find the attackers, whose identities and motives remain unknown.

According to the Gauteng provincial police, the tragedy occurred in one of the townships in eastern Johannesburg. Law enforcement was called to the scene around 11:00 PM after reports of gunfire.

Arriving officers found numerous dead and injured. Among the victims were both men and women, reports NOS.

Preliminary information, which is currently being verified by investigators, suggests that about ten armed individuals arrived in the area in a minibus. They were allegedly dropped off near a gas station, after which the attackers entered the neighborhood from several sides and opened fire on local residents in various locations. After the attack, the criminals fled.

The police urged all witnesses to the incident to contact investigators and provide any information that may assist in the search for the shooters.

Legacy of Apartheid and High Crime Rate

The townships remain one of the most visible legacies of the apartheid era, which was abolished in the early 1990s. Many of these areas still suffer from poverty, poor infrastructure, and high crime rates.

Armed confrontations between criminal gangs fighting for influence and control over territories regularly occur in such informal settlements.

Mass shootings in these areas happen quite frequently. In December of last year, nine people were shot dead by unknown assailants in a café near Johannesburg. At that time, the criminals opened fire on patrons almost indiscriminately.

Just two weeks earlier, 12 people, including three children, were killed in a shooting at an illegal bar.

One of the Most Dangerous Regions in the World

South Africa remains one of the countries with the highest murder rates in the world. According to official data, in 2024 alone, around 26,000 people became victims of murder and intentional violent crimes — an average of about 70 people daily.

The new tragedy in Johannesburg has once again drawn attention to the issue of violence and organized crime in the impoverished areas of South Africa. While the police search for the attackers, local residents continue to live under constant threat, and authorities face the necessity of seeking long-term solutions to reduce the crime rate in the country.
