In Latvia, the number of dry grass fires significantly increased last year, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) reported to the LETA agency, writes LETA.
Last year, 956 such fires were recorded, which is 516 more than the previous year. In 2023, 752 grass fires have been registered. The first such fire last year was recorded only on April 1, whereas this year, by Friday morning, 271 dry grass fires have already been registered.
The head of the State Fire and Rescue Service, Mārtiņš Baltmanis, told the LETA agency that the burning of last year's grass is influenced not only by societal views but also by weather conditions — as soon as spring becomes dry, the number of such fires automatically increases.
Although there are penalties for burning grass, Baltmanis noted that it is not easy to catch violators.
He added that the State Fire and Rescue Service is actively working in the field of prevention, emphasizing that there were times when about 3,000 dry grass fires were registered in a year.
