On Wednesday, February 25, a woman contacted the police, reporting that her husband was currently on the phone with scammers, the State Police told bb.lv.
The criminals claimed they were calling from the bank, later explaining that they represented the security service and that, for security reasons, it was necessary to hand over a credit card.
After discussing the correct course of action with police officers, the call recipient agreed to meet the 'money mule' sent by the scammers at a pharmacy in the Riga neighborhood of Jugla.
Police officers promptly headed to the planned meeting location. One of the officers borrowed a pharmacist's coat from the pharmacy staff. Disguised as a pharmacy worker, he monitored the surroundings.
Soon, the 'money mule' arrived, to whom the resident handed over his credit card as planned, after which the officers from the Northern Division of Riga arrested the scammer on the spot.
Nearby was a second 'money mule' who, noticing the arrest, attempted to flee in a car. Shortly thereafter, a State Police crew blocked his vehicle's path and apprehended the fugitive.
Both arrested men are citizens of Latvia, born in 1995 and 1994. One of them had previously come to the attention of the police for illegal possession of gas weapons and for fraud.
