Last year, the State Police registered 46 criminal offenses related to defamation, which is 17 cases more than in 2024, according to police information, LETA reports.
The Chief of the State Police, Armand Ruks, acknowledged to journalists on Thursday that there is a high level of activity in spreading various fabrications and lies, particularly on social media.
The Criminal Code provides for probation supervision, community service, or a monetary fine for the intentional dissemination of knowingly false, defamatory fabrications about another person in printed or other reproduced works, as well as orally, if done publicly.
For defamation in the media, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community service, or a monetary fine may be applied.
