Shortly before 7:30 PM, several fire brigades rushed to a private house in Salaspils. The fire broke out in an outbuilding on the property, which housed a sauna with a living room and an attached wood shed. The homeowner recounts that the flames were noticed when they were already at a significant height, so they didn’t even attempt to extinguish it themselves — they had to rely on the rescuers.
The fire rising above the burning outbuilding was visible from several kilometers away, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3). The shed attached to the building, where firewood and gardening tools were stored, suffered the most damage. Residential areas were also affected. Several family members were in the neighboring house at the time. Remembering the unpleasant Sunday evening, the owner can barely hold back tears. He heard the roofing material starting to crack.
"What can I say? We called the firefighters — and that’s it. Then the police showed up, only pushing us out of the house. Well, I would say they are monkeys. No one else. The house is not burning — the outbuilding is burning. I said: let me get the documents, the main thing is — I’m naked. And they just keep pushing: ‘We will use force now.’ I said: I will also use force now," the homeowner recounts.
It all ended only with a sharp verbal exchange — the household members were allowed to briefly return to the premises and put on warm jackets. The family had to spend two hours outside while the firefighters completed their work. The owner explains that there was electricity and a stove in the outbuilding. What caused the fire remains a mystery.
The fire completely destroyed the wood shed and damaged half of the roof of the outbuilding, which is now covered with a tarp. The windows of the house facing the fire's source also cracked.
The owner says that there were living quarters under the burned roof, which will likely be restored with the help of his son.
"But now, in winter, of course, no. You can’t do it in winter. First, everything needs to be dried out; everything is soaked with water. (DP: Will you be restoring it yourself in the summer?) If I could build everything myself, then... probably now I won’t be able to, but I will help with my mind."
In the coming days, experts will visit the property, and then it will become clear what caused the fire.
