Four Zemgale police officers concealed a colleague's responsibility for an accident

In the second half of January, the Bureau of Internal Security (BVB) detained four employees of the Zemgale Regional Department of the State Police on suspicion of inaction and service forgery committed by a group of individuals by prior agreement, reports LETA citing the State Police.

During the pre-trial investigation, it was revealed that the police officers may have intentionally failed to fulfill their duties and provided false information in official documents to help another police officer avoid legal responsibility for causing a traffic accident.

In turn, the police officer who provoked the accident was detained on suspicion of inciting other police officers to inaction — that is, failing to perform actions that, according to the law and official assignment, a public official was obligated to carry out.

The Bureau of Internal Security (BVB) conducted procedural actions during which items related to the investigated crimes were discovered and seized.

The police officers involved in the commission of the crimes have the status of individuals entitled to defense. They were assigned preventive measures not related to deprivation of liberty, including a ban on holding certain positions in the State Police for three of them.

The crime was uncovered in close cooperation with the State Police, which provided the BVB with initial information about a possible violation of the law.

In the interests of the investigation, no additional information is currently being provided.
