The accident in Daugavpils raises surprise — how could this even happen?

Around 8:40 AM, police assistance was needed at the intersection of Kaunas and Smilšu streets in Daugavpils. The accident involved Audi, Opel, and a medical vehicle. While the drivers tried to determine who was at fault, a second accident occurred — a BMW driver, attempting to bypass the damaged cars, caused a new collision, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).

The situation at the intersection of Kaunas and Smilšu looked shocking — a broken lamp post, nearby on the sidewalk stood an Opel, into the trunk of which a medical minibus had "crashed". To the left — a silver Audi with a dented hood. Around — debris from the cars.

A resident of a nearby house, Valery, peeked out the window after several dull thuds and went to find out what happened:

"The guy was going on ‘green’, the ‘ambulance’ crashed into him (Degpunktā: On ‘red’?) Yes. They pushed him here and hit the Audi. And then (so they say, I didn’t see it myself) a BMW slightly ‘kissed’ the ‘ambulance.’"

The State Police provided a restrained comment regarding the collision between the Opel, Audi, and the medical vehicle — the investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be determined whether the emergency vehicle had its lights and sirens activated. However, the police confirmed that the passing BMW did indeed hit the medical vehicle.

According to a local resident, accidents at this intersection happen regularly, but he does not know how to solve the problem:

"Accidents happen here often. (Degpunktā: Right here?) Yes, at this intersection. (Degpunktā: What’s the problem?) I don’t even know. (Degpunktā: They’re just in a hurry?) Yes. I can’t say, but it’s a place where there are a lot of [accidents]. (Degpunktā: What to do?) There’s a traffic light, the speed limit is normal — 50 km/h. No idea what can be done here."

Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. For two hours, Valery listened to the drivers' explanations, after which everyone drove away. The BMW and Opel managed on their own, while the others required tow trucks.
