On Central Street, which runs through Ogre, a lane in the direction of Daugavpils was temporarily blocked the day before, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3). A truck was standing in one lane, and in the other, a little further ahead, was a severely damaged passenger car. At the time of the collision, the traffic light was not functioning, so it is possible that one of the drivers did not take the road signs into account.
Both lanes in the direction of Lielvarde were blocked by police and fire rescue services. Emergency services surrounded the two vehicles — both had front-end damage.
The truck driver Vyacheslav recounted how the accident happened:
“I was driving on the main road. The traffic light was not working at that moment, nothing was flashing at all. A person just came out from that side. Either he didn’t see me, or something distracted his attention. But that’s how it happened. There was a man. He didn’t even brake at all. He just crashed into me at speed. He was driving fast, he jumped right in front of me. I had nowhere to go, I started to brake, but it was useless. That’s how it all happened.”
As a result of the impact, the Volkswagen car was severely deformed: the front axle was bent, the windshield was shattered, and various parts were torn off. Rescuers had to be called to free the driver from the mangled vehicle.
“There was one person in the passenger car, he was trapped. We freed him and handed him over to the Emergency Medical Service,” said Egils Vilnis Jakushkin, deputy head of the Ogre section of the Regional Administration of the Riga District Fire and Rescue Service.
The driver of the passenger car was taken to the hospital, and his condition is assessed as satisfactory.
