On Wednesday, the first holiday weekend, ten drivers in Latvia were detained for being highly intoxicated, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.
In total, three administrative offense proceedings and ten criminal proceedings have been initiated for driving a vehicle while intoxicated.
The vehicles of six drivers, against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated, will be confiscated, and in four cases, the cost of the vehicle will be recovered.
In November 2022, amendments to the Criminal Code came into force, providing for criminal liability for driving a vehicle or teaching driving if the concentration of alcohol exceeds 1.5 per mille during a breath or blood test.
The vehicle is also confiscated if its owner was driving it while heavily intoxicated or refused to undergo a test for the presence of intoxicating substances in the body. In cases where the vehicle driven under the influence belongs to another person, the full or partial cost of that vehicle will be recovered from the offender.
