The State Police initiated a criminal process against a man for attacking Ventspils municipal police officers with a knife and an axe, reported LETA agency representative of the State Police Madara Šeršņova.
According to her, the municipal police received the call at noon on December 6. Two inspectors from the Ventspils municipal police explained the rules that must be followed when living in an apartment building and asked the resident to present an identification document.
The man went into the apartment supposedly to get the documents, but returned with a knife and an axe in his hands, pointing them towards both inspectors. Seeing this, the police officers stepped back a few steps, but the man began to make threats and then started to deliberately swing the knife and axe towards one of the officers, missing him.
Taking precautions, the police officers detained the man. A pepper spray and handcuffs were used.
Later, officers from the State Police arrived at the scene to help subdue the man.
The State Police initiated a criminal process for the attack on a law enforcement officer. The man has been recognized as a suspect.
The State Police petitioned the court for the application of a preventive measure in the form of arrest for the detained individual; however, the court rejected this petition, so the police applied a preventive measure in the form of police supervision.
According to the Criminal Law, such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years, short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision.
