On Saturday, December 13, a major fire destroyed an apartment on the third floor in Bēruta Baumane Alley in Bolderājas. The owner of the property was not home at the time, so the disaster was only noticed when a window flew out of the loggia with a loud crash. The causes of the incident were investigated by the show Degpunktā (TV3).

For the third day, charred furniture and construction materials thrown out by firefighters from the apartment on the third floor have been lying near the multi-story building. Some items got stuck in the branches of bushes. The loggia of the burned apartment is now covered with plastic. Window frames are lying directly on the lawn. Neighbor Nina, who lives one floor below — under the burned apartment, recounts that they flew out of the loggia entirely — along with the frames:

"I was sitting in the living room. And suddenly, you know, such an explosion! I look — the frame flew out. The explosion was huge. I don’t know what caused it. I quickly ran over, looked — everything flew outside. Then there was a second explosion, also strong. My husband and I quickly got dressed, I told him to move faster — you never know. You know, even the house shook. While we were going down, another smaller explosion boomed."

While the residents waited for the arrival of rescuers, more and more people gathered in the yard, but the owner of the apartment was not among them. His neighbor informed him about what happened.

"They left for business. Someone called him and said that everything was bad. He returned immediately," said the woman who was cleaning in the entrance.

The owner of the apartment arrived at the same time as the rescuers — and only managed to open the door. The traces of the fire, visible both in the entrance and under the balcony, indicate that the apartment is completely destroyed. Fortunately, this was not his permanent residence. Nina recounts that the man bought the apartment two years ago and only lived there on weekends — he came on Fridays and Saturdays to do repairs.

"Maybe he had acetone there — he was doing repairs. He said there were paints, and his TV was standing just like ours, and he also left his phone charging," the neighbor recounts.

For about two hours, the rescuers fought the fire, and during all this time, residents were prohibited from returning to their apartments. During this time, water from the burning apartment began to seep through the walls and ceiling, gradually flooding Nina's apartment.

"When I came in here, the police arrived, they were interviewing everyone. They came in — and there was water five centimeters deep. Water was flowing very strongly here — right here! We had a carpet here — now it’s all wet, I don’t even know what to do with it now. Should I throw it out? Very heavy. Water was flowing down all the wallpaper," Nina recalls.

Despite the damaged walls and ceiling, the woman is grateful that no one was hurt and the fire did not spread to other apartments. The insurance company will take care of the repairs in her apartment. However, her neighbor above will have to start everything from scratch — the entire apartment project is destroyed.
