The judgment of the Zemgale District Court has come into effect, according to which a man has been sentenced to two months of imprisonment for public insults against a judge, the prosecutor's office reports, writes LETA.
On June 7, 2022, a man in the Zemgale District Court in Tukums streamed an open court session regarding an administrative offense live on the social network Facebook.
Acting out of hostile motives, he verbally spread false information about the judge, calling her a fraud working on the basis of a forged document, and claiming that she was not a judge and had no right to make decisions.
The accused also stated that the judge was a criminal. Thus, he deliberately spread false, defamatory, and inaccurate statements against the official.
During the consideration of the criminal case in the Zemgale District Court, the accused ignored and disobeyed repeated warnings from the judge to maintain silence, not to speak without permission, and not to engage in conversations with those present in the courtroom.
Despite warnings about the need to maintain order during the hearings, the accused continued to disrupt the proceedings. For this behavior, he was fined 2200 euros, and for failing to appear at the court session without a valid reason, he received an additional fine of 1000 euros.
The accused also failed to appear at the Zemgale District Court session without a valid reason and did not inform the court of the reasons for his absence, so the court ruled to leave his appeal without consideration.
Since no cassation appeal was filed, the judgment of the Zemgale District Court from April 2024 came into effect in December, according to which the man was found guilty of defamation spread through the media and sentenced to two months of imprisonment.
