On Monday, residents of Sarkandaugava witnessed active police actions. Panic in the area began after a driver who committed a crime was involved in a serious accident. The man managed to flee the scene, but soon the police were on his trail, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).
Firefighters gathered around the car that had ended up on its side. The body was crumpled, the windows shattered — this scene could be observed on Monday evening near the Circle K gas station in Sarkandaugava. According to a local resident, the accident distracted her from watching television. "At first, I didn’t even understand what was happening," she admits.
One of the women living nearby witnessed the incident. She was heading to the gas station when she heard strange sounds.
"I saw the car do probably five flips — the driver lost control. I was in shock and immediately called 112. It seemed to me that he [the driver — ed.] was dead, because looking at how everything happened, it was hard to believe that anyone could survive. The car was smoking, people started to gather. I got closer, and he had already run away," the witness recounts.
The car crossed bollards, several lanes of traffic, and tram tracks before coming to a stop. Fortunately, there were no people or other vehicles in its path.
The eyewitness notes that she made the right choice that evening when she decided to leave her house. "I was really lucky. It felt like a video game, unreal," she adds.
On Tuesday morning, drivers coming from Tilta Street towards Duntes Street faced difficulties. A road sign indicating that they were on a less significant road was standing between the bollards. However, a driver coming from Duntes Street hit this sign and dragged it several dozen meters to a meadow. On Tuesday, workers arrived at the scene and installed a new sign.
Residents of the area noticed that numerous emergency services were attracted to the scene, including a dog handler with a dog. The police also managed to identify the suspected driver.
"According to the information available to the State Police, the fleeing individual is presumably Denis Mironchenko, who had previously committed a property crime. The State Police have initiated a criminal process regarding this matter," said police representative Lina Bagdone.
According to eyewitnesses, the man fled the scene, limping. He was wearing only one shoe and a white cap. However, he did not hide for long — on Tuesday afternoon, Denis Mironchenko was found. The investigation is ongoing.
