Earlier, reports were made about a tragic traffic accident in the Saldus region, near the settlement of Kursiši. The car, which had five people inside, veered off the road and rolled over several times. Three died, and two were taken to the hospital, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).
It is known that the Opel car was heading towards Saldus and near Kursiši, for unknown reasons the driver lost control, which marked the beginning of the tragic events.
According to initial observations by experts, the speed of the vehicle could have been around 100 km/h. After veering into a field, the car rolled over several times, and it is hard to believe, but four of the people inside were thrown out of the cabin — some ended up further away than the car itself. One passenger remained trapped in the vehicle.
Two men, aged 27 and 46, and a 75-year-old woman died. A 17-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with fractures and bruises, as well as a 43-year-old man with much more serious injuries. It was established that he was in a state of alcohol intoxication.
Currently, it is being determined who among the five was driving. One thing is known — none of them were wearing seat belts.
"This only speaks to one thing — in this case, human recklessness turned into tragedy. The bravado that many follow — 'why wear a seat belt' — clearly shows what this leads to. Several fatalities," noted CSDD road safety expert Oskars Irbitis.
As part of the initiated criminal process, the condition of the road will also be examined. The Opel was equipped with winter tires with a tread depth of 3.5 mm, which is below the permissible norm for winter conditions, although formally such tires are still allowed for a week by law. However, experts have been urging for at least a month not to wait until December 1 and to timely change tires to those suitable for winter conditions.
