The State Police detained a person who threatened to shoot politician Ainars Shlesers, the police reported to the LETA agency.
The detained individual is currently in a temporary detention facility.
A criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident under Article 132 of the Criminal Law - threat of murder or causing serious bodily harm, if there were grounds to fear that the threats could be carried out. For such a crime, the punishment is imprisonment for up to one year, short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision.
The police reported that the investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the prosecutor's office. Considering the protection of personal data, the police do not comment on the motives of the detained individual, but it is known that he had previously come to the attention of both the police and medical professionals.
The leader of the party "Latvia First" (LPM) Ainars Shlesers received threats on Friday that he would be shot, after which he contacted the security authorities.
The police received a report of the threats yesterday around 23:00.
LPM representative Liga Krapane informed the LETA agency that Shlesers received threats through social media and immediately reported it to the police.
The Public Relations Department of the State Police previously reported that a video with threats against Shlesers is circulating on the internet, and its author has been identified.
Shlesers' party, whose politicians are known for their rhetoric, accused LPM's political opponents in a statement regarding the threats to its leader of inciting hatred against Shlesers, which the party believes led to the threats against him.
