Rescuers received two calls in the past 24 hours due to burnt food.

In the past 24 hours, rescuers received two calls regarding food left unattended on the stove that was burning, reports the LETA agency, citing the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).

Both calls were made in Riga. At 22:49, a call was received to Umeo Street, where on the fourth floor of a five-story residential building, food left unattended on the stove was burning over an area of 0.1 square meters. One person was rescued from the smoke-filled apartment and handed over to the Emergency Medical Service (EMS). A total of 20 people evacuated from the building before the arrival of the SFRS, and the fire was extinguished at 23:31.

In the morning at 7:14, the SFRS received a call to Stara Jūrmala Gatve in Riga, where in an apartment on the 11th floor of a multi-apartment building, food left unattended on the stove was burning over an area of 0.01 square meters. One person was rescued from the smoke-filled home and handed over to EMS personnel. Soon, by 8 a.m., the SFRS's work at the scene was completed.

The SFRS notes that firefighters receive calls daily when residents report smoke in the stairwell or smoke coming from the window of a residential building.

Most often, when inspecting the building, rescuers find that food has burned on the stove in the kitchen of the apartment, and there is no one home or the residents have fallen asleep.

The SFRS reminds that one should not leave the home or go to rest, even for a short time, while cooking, as burning food can produce heavy smoke that is dangerous to the health of those nearby, as well as generate heat that can lead to the ignition of objects around the stove.

Additionally, at 17:31, rescuers received a call in the Mežares parish of the Jēkabpils region, where a collision occurred between a tow truck and a tractor. As a result, technical fluids spilled over a distance of 250 meters on the roadway. Firefighters collected them using absorbents and also disconnected the battery terminals of the vehicles.

In total, over the past 24 hours, the SFRS received 38 calls — seven for fire extinguishing, 21 for rescue operations, and another ten false alarms.
