The Security Police (SP) proposed to the Prosecutor's Office on October 1 of this year to initiate criminal proceedings against a citizen of Latvia for the so-called bribery of voters in the municipal elections held this year in one of the parishes of the Jelgava region.

The criminal process against an individual suspected of illegally influencing voters on the day of the municipal elections, June 7 of this year, was initially initiated by the State Police. However, shortly thereafter, the Security Police, in accordance with its jurisdiction, took over the investigation of this case.

During the investigation, the Security Police established that the suspected man bribed several individuals in one of the parishes of the Jelgava region to vote for a specific list and candidate for deputy. He also organized the transportation of these voters to the polling station in his private vehicle.

The agency charges this individual with a crime specified in the second part of Article 90 of the Criminal Law — interference with the free exercise of citizens' right to elect deputies.

Preventive measures have been applied to the suspect: a ban on leaving the country and an obligation to report any change of residence.

The agency reminds that no individual is considered guilty until their guilt in committing a crime is established in accordance with the law.
