The Consumer Rights Protection Center (CRPC) will impose an administrative penalty on the operator of the micromobility rental service "Ride Mobility" (LLC "Ride") for not suspending operations in accordance with the CRPC's call, the center's director Zaiga Liepiņa informed the media on Friday.
The amount of the fine will be determined by the Consumer Rights Protection Center (CRPC) later.
Liepiņa noted that given the unwillingness of LLC "Ride" to cooperate with the CRPC, a decision is being prepared to impose a fine. Currently, the center is awaiting additional information from the service provider for a more in-depth assessment, and a risk assessment commission is being formed with the participation of representatives from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (RTSD), the State Police, and other agencies.
According to the CRPC, the activities of "Ride" are unacceptable and irresponsible, as the company does not ensure the safe provision of services.
Liepiņa added that objections have been received from "Ride". "In this statement, the service provider's attitude towards safety is formal: the company claims that age verification does not apply to them and is too expensive, although the company's rules state that electric bicycles can be used from the age of 18, but verification is not conducted," she said.
The head of the registration department of the RTSD, Aivis Ozoliņš, explained that "Ride" has taken advantage of "gaps in the law," as these vehicles meet the definition of a bicycle. Therefore, he added, amendments to the traffic law are being prepared to classify such vehicles ("self-propelled bicycle") into a separate category and establish additional requirements, such as registration.
As reported by bb.lv, two girls died while riding "Ride" scooters in Riga.
