Spring this year started cool and dry — precipitation was half of the usual amount.
The average temperature in April in Latvia was +5.3 degrees — this is 0.8 degrees below normal, meteorologists report. The coldest days were April 2 and 11 (down to -5.5), while the warmest was April 15, when the air warmed up to +17.9.
Precipitation totaled only 16.6 mm — about 46% of the norm. The most rain fell in Sigulda, while the least was in Dobele. Most areas recorded moderate or even extreme drought.
At the same time, there were more sunny hours than usual, and no temperature records were set during the month.
The dry weather has been ongoing for a long time: the period from autumn to early spring has become one of the driest in the entire history of observations.
