This year, seven people died on the railway tracks and near them in Latvia, reported representatives of the state joint-stock company "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz).
Another nine people were injured on or near the railway tracks. Most of the accidents occurred due to the negligence or recklessness of the injured or deceased individuals.
On October 1, two girls were killed after being struck by a train while crossing a closed crossing on an electric bicycle at the Imanta station in Riga. One train was standing at the Imanta station while another train was approaching the station from the opposite direction.
Although the train driver applied emergency brakes and sounded a warning signal, the fatal collision could not be avoided, LDz reports.
LDz reminds people that the railway is a high-risk area, so before crossing the tracks, one should always check for approaching trains from both sides. Also, remember that it is impossible to stop a train instantly. The braking distance of a train can reach one kilometer, depending on its total mass, and a collision cannot be avoided as the train has no room to maneuver.
