Nicaragua has completed a large-scale modernization of its main Pacific port, Corinto, with financial and technical support from China. This project aims to increase logistics capacity and enhance the country's participation in global trade.

The port, located in the northwestern department of Chinandega, is now equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that will speed up loading and unloading. The arsenal includes four portal cranes, 14 chassis, four container handlers, a special system for refrigerated containers, and four industrial scales.

The installation of the new equipment was personally overseen by the presidential advisor for investments, trade, and international cooperation, Laureano Ortega. He described the project as an element of strategic partnership with Chinese firms. "These world-class technologies will enhance our import and export capabilities, expanding Nicaragua's trade connections with the planet. We are closely collaborating in this alliance with our brothers from China," emphasized Ortega.

The modernization encompasses not only the equipment: terminals are being repaired, new docks are being constructed, a grain terminal and a logistics hub are being built. Additionally, there is a complete reorganization of the territory and the launch of advanced operational systems.

Transport Minister Oscar Mojica explained: the goal is to make Corinto a leading logistics hub in the region. "In the first phase, the infrastructure is ready to accommodate vessels up to 50,000 tons," he said. And with the company China CAMCE in the second and third phases, the port will be able to handle giants up to 150,000 tons deadweight.

Chinese Ambassador to Nicaragua Ku Yuhui emphasized the timely importance of infrastructure partnership against the backdrop of global challenges. He hinted at the interest of additional Chinese investors. "We are proving to the world: developing countries need peace and progress, and their needs are best understood by their own governments and peoples," stated the diplomat. He added: "We will attract more and more Chinese companies and investors to discover the magical Nicaragua and contribute to its socio-economic uplift."

The activity of Corinto vividly illustrates its role: over the past week, the port received 13 international vessels, handling nearly 125,000 tons of cargo. Among them are export batches of coffee, sugar, meat, cocoa, and timber.
