A Pill Against Greed: Mobile Operator Promises Not to Charge Controversial Fee to Residents of Latvia

LLC "BITE Latvija" has committed not to connect paid additional services without customer consent, the Consumer Rights Protection Centre (CRPC) reported to bb.lv.

It is reported that "BITE Latvija" (hereinafter - BITE) has submitted and received approval from the Consumer Rights Protection Centre (CRPC) for a written commitment. This is related to a notification sent by BITE on November 21, 2025, regarding changes to the terms of the electronic communications services contract through the automatic connection of the paid additional service "Bite Pamatkomplekts".

According to the information specified in the notification, the automatic connection of the "Bite Pamatkomplekts" service for €1.98 per month was planned to start on January 1, 2026.

Considering the large number of complaints and requests for consultations from consumers, the CRPC began assessing BITE's commercial practices in November, initiating an administrative case.

As part of the case, the CRPC informed BITE of the identified violations and assessed the measures for their elimination. Since BITE acknowledged the violation and developed measures to rectify it, the CRPC concluded that in this case, the written commitment is a sufficient and most effective measure to protect consumer interests.

LLC "BITE Latvija" submitted, and the PTAC approved the following written commitment:

– from January 1, 2026, not to connect the "Bite Pamatkomplekts" service to consumers for a fee until the consumer clearly and unequivocally expresses their consent to the connection of the service and the application of the fee;

– to immediately, but no later than December 19 of the current year, send information about the withdrawal of the Notification to all recipients, as well as publish the withdrawal of the Notification on the website bite.lv and in the customer self-service portal ManaBite;

– for consumers who have not made any changes to the existing contract before the day of sending the withdrawal of the Notification, the contracts and obligations that were in effect before the day of sending the Notification remain in force, including the duration of the contract and the consequences of its early termination;

– for consumers who made any changes to the existing contract before receiving the withdrawal of the Notification, ensure the possibility to return to the terms of the contract that were in effect before receiving the Notification, upon the consumer's request to BITE within one month from the date of sending the withdrawal.
