After the emergency closure of the meat pavilion at the Riga Central Market, dozens of entrepreneurs found themselves facing the necessity of urgent relocation. While trade has been maintained, sellers admit: no one knows how long the temporary solution will last and when they will be able to return to their usual working conditions.

This week, some meat traders have already started working in the fish and grocery pavilions of the Riga Central Market, reports TV3 News.

The relocation became a necessity after construction experts deemed the further operation of the meat pavilion unsafe. An inspection revealed serious wear on the supporting metal structures and the risk of their collapse.

For many entrepreneurs, the news came as a complete surprise.

"On Wednesday evening, we were told: don’t work tomorrow. Everyone was in shock. I have a couple of years left until retirement, and I don’t even know what will happen next," says meat seller Olga.

Now, meat counters are adjacent to fish displays. Customers have to search for their usual sellers in new locations, but traders say that many regular clients have already found them.

Some entrepreneurs managed to avoid serious losses thanks to their own stores and additional storage facilities for their products.

"We moved all the meat in advance. Some was sent for processing, so we managed to avoid losses," says seller Anita.

Before the closure, 33 traders worked in the meat pavilion. According to the market administration, 17 of them have already settled in other pavilions, while technical solutions are still being sought for the others. The temporary relocation is accompanied by the transfer of refrigeration equipment and the reconfiguration of trading places.

The situation raises questions not only among entrepreneurs but also among the residents of Riga. The Central Market is one of the largest food markets in the Baltics, and the meat pavilion has traditionally been considered one of its most visited facilities. Additional resonance was caused by the fact that structural problems were identified several years ago. It turned out that a technical inspection conducted in 2020 already indicated serious damage and the need for repairs to the building.

In the company "Rīgas nami," it is explained that the reconstruction of the pavilion was included in long-term plans; however, the current situation forced an acceleration of the process. According to company representative Agnese Licite, it was previously assumed that the meat pavilion would close for reconstruction only after the restoration of the former vegetable pavilion was completed. Now the timelines had to be revised.

According to the current plan, the sale of meat products should move to the reconstructed vegetable pavilion by the end of this year. This means that entrepreneurs will have to operate under temporary conditions for about six more months.

For now, the market continues to operate as usual; however, for dozens of traders, the coming months will be a period of adaptation and uncertainty.

The main question for many of them remains the same: will the current relocation be a temporary measure or will it drag on much longer than the promised timelines.
