The Synchronization of the Baltic States with Europe's Power Grids Received the International Award 'Project of the Year'

The synchronization of the Baltic States with Europe's power grids has been awarded the global 'Project of the Year' award.

One of the largest and most renowned project management organizations in the world, the Project Management Institute (PMI), awarded the synchronization project at a ceremony in Phoenix, Arizona, recognizing its implementation under a complex and accelerated schedule.

Hannes Kont, head of the synchronization and crisis readiness division of the Estonian energy company 'Elering', stated that the title of the best infrastructure project of the year in the world is a significant international recognition for the synchronization project, which stood out for its scale and the collaboration of four countries—from infrastructure construction to the transformation of IT systems, monitoring systems, and market systems. 'Due to Russian aggression, the already tight schedule had to be accelerated by another year, but we were able to successfully tackle this task together,' he said.

PMI noted that the synchronization of the Baltic States is an outstanding achievement that brought together thousands of specialists from four countries. Through joint efforts, energy independence for the region was ensured, and its energy security was strengthened.

The synchronization project was implemented in close cooperation by the electricity system operators of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. The project received substantial support from the European Union and the European Network of Transmission System Operators, providing technical guidance as well as operational and legal expertise. The project was co-financed by the European Union.

On February 8 of this year, the Baltic States exited the Russia-controlled BRELL power grid, and on February 9, their power grids were successfully connected to the synchronous zone of Europe. Synchronization allows the Baltic States to manage their electricity systems in close cooperation with other countries in continental Europe, ensuring stable and reliable frequency management, strengthening energy independence, and enhancing energy security throughout the region. The Baltic States are now part of the European electricity grid, which serves over 400 million consumers in 26 countries.

Founded in 1969, PMI is a non-profit organization headquartered in the United States, with 700,000 members and 250 chapters worldwide. The Institute develops internationally recognized standards and certifications for project management professionals.
