On Tuesday night in Moscow, a fire broke out at an oil refinery in the Kapotnya area following a drone attack. Due to the air raid alert, all four airports of the Russian capital temporarily ceased operations.
Moscow has once again been subjected to one of the largest drone attacks in recent times.
According to the mayor of the Russian capital, Sergey Sobyanin, a fire broke out at the Moscow oil refinery located in the Kapotnya area as a result of the nighttime raid by Ukrainian drones. Russian authorities claim that there are no casualties.
Sobyanin also stated that air defense systems allegedly destroyed 60 drones heading towards Moscow. However, there is no official information on the number of drones that reached their targets.
One of the most notable consequences of the attack was the temporary shutdown of all four Moscow airports — Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky. Restrictions were imposed overnight, but in the morning, the airports gradually returned to their normal operating mode.
The Moscow oil refinery is considered one of the key facilities in the fuel infrastructure of the Russian capital. Earlier, Moscow authorities reported that the facility meets more than 40% of the city's fuel needs. This is why such facilities regularly become targets of Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.
For ordinary residents, the consequences of such attacks most often manifest through airport operational restrictions, disruptions in transport communication, and heightened security measures.
This is not the first case of an attack on the facility in Kapotnya. The previous strike on the refinery was recorded on May 17. At that time, according to Russian authorities, 12 people were injured, most of whom were employees of the facility.
Simultaneously with the events in Moscow, Ukrainian drones attacked other facilities on Russian territory. It was previously reported that a fire broke out at an oil depot in the Krasnodar region on the same night.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing war, oil and energy infrastructure facilities remain some of the most vulnerable targets on both sides of the conflict line.
The attack on the Moscow oil refinery has become another episode in the ongoing campaign of strikes against energy infrastructure facilities. The scale of the damage and the impact of the incident on the operation of the facility have not yet been clarified by Russian authorities.
