In Jelgava, the police arrested a woman who was driving under the influence of alcohol without a technical inspection, insurance, and documents. Her husband was later arrested as well — the man threatened the police and attempted to obstruct their work.
The incident occurred on the evening of May 23 in Jelgava during the patrol of the State Police Special Assignment Battalion officers.
Around 10:00 PM, law enforcement noticed a Volkswagen vehicle that was moving uncertainly and accelerating sharply on Prokhorova Street. According to the police, the driver likely noticed the police vehicle and tried to avoid contact with the officers.
After activating their lights, the police began to pursue the car. The vehicle stopped at a bus stop.
A woman was behind the wheel and could not present a driver's license. A check revealed that she was intoxicated — her blood alcohol level was 1.28 per mille. Additionally, it was found that the vehicle had not passed the state technical inspection and lacked the mandatory OCTA insurance.
While the violation was being processed, a man approached the scene, who was later found to be the driver’s husband. According to the police, the man was in a state of intoxication and was behaving aggressively. He interfered with the officers' work, threatened the police, and suggested they “sort it out.”
Despite warnings, the man continued to argue with the police. Later, while talking on the phone, he also threatened that another person would come to the scene and “scatter the police on the ground.” When the decision was made to arrest him, the man tried to flee, but he was apprehended and taken first for a medical examination and then to a sobering-up station.
Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the woman for several violations — for driving under the influence, lack of OCTA, lack of technical inspection, and driving without the necessary documents. An administrative process has also been initiated against the man for disobeying lawful police orders, obstructing the work of officials, and not declaring his place of residence.
Such cases are regularly cited by the police as examples of how one traffic violation can quickly escalate into a whole chain of offenses — especially when alcohol and aggressive behavior are involved.
The State Police once again urged residents not to drive under the influence of alcohol and not to allow their loved ones to do so. In emergency situations, residents are asked to report such incidents by calling 112.
