U.S. authorities have detained Adis Lastres Morera — the sister of the executive president of the Cuban conglomerate GAESA, which unites military-run enterprises. According to Reuters, she is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement awaiting deportation.
The United States has arrested Adis Lastres Morera, the sister of the executive president of GAESA — a sprawling conglomerate of military-run enterprises.
As reported by Reuters, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced this on Thursday.
Morera, who entered the U.S. in 2023 as a lawful permanent resident, is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) pending the completion of deportation proceedings, according to a separate statement from ICE. Her presence poses a threat to the United States and harms America's foreign policy interests, the statement noted.
Cuban leadership rarely speaks publicly about GAESA, which stands for Grupo de Administración Empresarial (or "Business Administration Group").
In Havana, it has long been claimed that such caution is necessary to counter the U.S. trade and financial blockade, which severely complicates the island's business dealings with the outside world.
According to bb.lv, the situation may heighten tensions between the U.S. and Cuba, which remain complicated due to sanctions and years of economic restrictions. Cuban authorities traditionally view GAESA's activities as part of a system to protect the country's economy under the American blockade.
