The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported a sharp increase in cases of gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia in European countries. According to the agency, in 2024, STI rates reached their highest levels in the last decade.

New data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows that in 2024, the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) reached record levels across Europe, driven by a sharp increase in gonorrhea, syphilis, and congenital syphilis, as well as worsening gaps in testing and prevention, reports Deutsche Welle. This is stated in an ECDC press release and a series of relevant reports published on Thursday, May 21.

Data for 2024 indicate that the number of gonorrhea cases reached 106,331, which is a 303 percent increase compared to 2015. The number of syphilis cases during the same period more than doubled to 45,577. Chlamydia remains the most frequently reported STI, with 213,443 cases, according to the document.

"Over the past 10 years, there has been an increase in sexually transmitted infections, and in 2024, this rate reached a record high. Without treatment, these infections can lead to serious complications, such as chronic pain and infertility, and in the case of syphilis, heart or nervous system problems," emphasized Bruno Chiancio, head of the ECDC's infection department, reminding of the importance of using condoms and getting tested when symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases appear.

Experts warn that without timely treatment, STIs can lead to serious complications, including infertility and damage to internal organs. The ECDC emphasizes the importance of prevention, regular testing, and the use of protective measures.
