The tragedy occurred in Galicia, Spain: a two-year-old child spent several hours in a locked car in the heat after her father mistakenly went to work, forgetting to take his daughter to kindergarten.
A two-year-old girl in northwest Spain died from heat after being accidentally left in her father's car. Today in Galicia, temperatures reached around 26 degrees, but in some places it was significantly hotter, reports NOS.
According to local media, the man first took his older child to school. He then intended to take his younger daughter to kindergarten but got distracted by a phone call. Instead of going to kindergarten, he went to work and left the child in the car.
The alarm was raised by the girl's mother when she came to pick up her child from kindergarten in the afternoon and learned that the girl had not been brought there in the morning. Emergency services were called. The girl, who died from the heat, was taken to the hospital. Doctors attempted to resuscitate her for 20 minutes, after which death was officially declared. The causes of death were cited as severe dehydration and heat stroke.
The police have begun an investigation, and the girl's family is receiving psychological support. A two-day mourning period has been declared in the town of Brión, and residents have been urged to honor the child's memory with a moment of silence.
Children overheat faster
In hot weather, the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly. This is especially dangerous for children: a child overheats three to five times faster than an adult. According to the organization Kids and Car Safety, about 40 children die each year in hot cars in the U.S. — an average of one child every nine days. 86% of the deceased children were under three years old.
After the tragedy, the city authorities declared mourning, and the child's family is receiving psychological support. The police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, which, according to preliminary data, resulted from fatal negligence.
