Trump explained why he raised tariffs on cars from the EU

U.S. President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union to 25%, explaining this as an effort to accelerate the relocation of European automakers' production to the United States.

As reported by bb.lv, he stated this in a conversation with journalists.

On May 1, Trump announced his decision to raise tariffs on cars imported from the EU to 25%, arguing that the European Union allegedly did not comply with the terms of the trade agreement with the United States.

In a conversation with journalists, the American president clarified that the countries of the European Union are spending money to build car factories in the United States, and the new tariffs should accelerate this process.

"I raised tariffs on cars and trucks to 25%, this is billions of dollars coming into the United States, and it makes them move production from their factories much faster," Trump stated.

At the same time, the head of the White House emphasized that the EU "did not comply" with the agreement with the United States.

It should be noted that this refers to a framework trade agreement between the EU and the United States, concluded in Turnberry, Scotland, on July 27, 2025, which established tariffs on European imports to the United States at 15%.

On March 26, the European Parliament adopted two proposals regarding tariffs within the framework trade agreement between the EU and the United States. Among other things, they stipulate that the agreements will only be valid if Washington fulfills its obligations.

The increase in tariffs could escalate trade tensions between the parties and impact the automotive industry on both sides of the Atlantic, especially if the EU responds with mirror measures, writes bb.lv.
