Loud Verdict in Georgia: Former Defense Minister Burchuadze Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

The Tbilisi City Court has issued a guilty verdict against former Georgian Defense Minister Dzhuanser Burchuadze, finding him guilty of abuse of power and money laundering, and sentencing him to ten years in prison.

The Tbilisi City Court has issued a guilty verdict against former Georgian Defense Minister Dzhuanser Burchuadze. He was found guilty of abuse of power and money laundering, receiving a sentence of 10 years in prison.

According to the Georgian publication SOVA, citing "European Truth," Judge Irakli Khuskvadze also announced verdicts for other participants in the case. Former Deputy Minister Georgy Khaindrava and the ex-minister's son-in-law Vasili Mkheidze were sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment.

In addition to the prison term, Burchuadze and Khaindrava received an additional ban on holding public office. This ban will be in effect for two years.

Confiscation of Property

As part of the court ruling, significant property belonging to Burchuadze was confiscated. Among it are a land plot and a house located in Spain, as well as a house and a parking space in the picturesque village of Tskneti.

Suspended Sentence and Admission of Guilt

Former head of the procurement department of the Ministry of Defense Vladimir Gudushauri received a lighter sentence. He was given a 4-year suspended sentence, a fine of 10,000 lari, and a one-year ban on public office.

This decision was made possible due to a procedural agreement with Gudushauri. During the trial, he fully admitted his guilt.

Charges Filed

Former Minister Burchuadze was charged with serious crimes under Articles 194 and 332 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. These articles pertain to corrupt activities and money laundering.

Khaindrava and Gudushauri were accused of embezzlement of funds on a large scale. Vasili Mkheidze, in turn, was involved in the case as an accomplice in committing this crime.
