The bill on the unification of Romania and Moldova passed through the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament under the procedure of so-called "silent adoption." The document is now to be considered by the Senate, which will make the final decision on the initiative.
The Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament approved a bill proposing the unification of the country with Moldova, as reported by DW. This is evidenced by data published on the official websites of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of Romania.
The initiative was introduced by the "SOS România" party and was accepted under the procedure of "silent adoption." According to Romanian legislation, if a bill is not reviewed and rejected by deputies within the established period — 45 days, it is automatically considered approved by the lower house of parliament.
The text of the document states that the Parliament of Romania decides on the unification with the Republic of Moldova and authorizes the government of the country to immediately begin negotiations with the authorities of Chișinău to formalize the possible unification.
The bill will now be forwarded to the Senate, which is the decisive chamber in this legislative process.
The topic of unification of the two states remains a subject of active political discussions on both sides of the Prut River. In January 2026, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that she would support unification if a corresponding referendum were held.
In recent years, the number of supporters of this idea in Moldova has noticeably increased. According to sociological surveys conducted in the spring of 2026, about 42% of the citizens of the republic support unification with Romania, while 47% oppose it. In Romania itself, the level of support for unification is significantly higher, reaching approximately 72%.
An additional factor for rapprochement remains the close economic and humanitarian ties between the two countries. More than a third of Moldovan citizens also hold Romanian citizenship, and Romania is the largest trading partner of the republic and one of its key allies on the path to European integration.
Despite the approval of the initiative in the Chamber of Deputies, it is still only about passing one of the stages of the legislative procedure. For further advancement of the project, support from the Senate is necessary, and any possible decisions affecting the state status of Moldova will require the consent of its citizens and authorities.
