Powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela and Japan: state of emergency declared, casualties reported

Strong earthquakes with magnitudes up to 7.5 have been recorded in two countries—Venezuela and Japan. Buildings have been destroyed in Venezuela, authorities have declared a state of emergency, and casualties have been reported. In Japan, an operational headquarters has been established to address the aftermath of the disaster and assess potential damage.

Powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela and Japan on the evening of June 24. Destruction has been reported in several areas, and specialists continue to assess the scale of the consequences.

This was reported by CNN, The Japan Times, and Venezuela's Minister of Internal Affairs Diosdado Cabello on the air of the Venezolana de Televisión channel.

In particular, in Venezuela, the magnitude of the tremors reached 7.5, while in northern Japan, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 was recorded.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake in Japan was located at a depth of about 50 kilometers off the coast of Iwate Prefecture. The tremors were also felt in Tokyo and other areas of the country.

A special operational group has been established under the Prime Minister's Office of Japan to coordinate actions and mitigate the possible consequences of the natural disaster.

In Venezuela, two strong earthquakes occurred in succession. The first tremor, with a magnitude of 7.2, was recorded near the city of San Felipe shortly after 6:04 PM Eastern Time. About 40 seconds later, a more powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck. Its epicenter was located approximately 23 kilometers southeast of the city of Yumare.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake in Venezuela poses a serious threat. The agency declared a red alert level and warned of a high likelihood of numerous casualties and significant destruction.

"A red alert level has been declared due to the tremors that have caused loss of life and economic losses. Significant casualties and extensive damage are likely, and the disaster is expected to be widespread," the warning stated.

Later, Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency in the country. She confirmed that there are casualties and injuries as a result of the earthquake, but exact figures on the number of victims have not yet been provided.

Rescue services in both countries continue to work in the affected areas. Authorities are gathering information on the destruction and potential new risks, including the threat of landslides and aftershocks. Experts note that a final assessment of the consequences will only be possible after the most affected areas have been surveyed.
