Previously, U.S. citizens and male immigrants aged 18 to 25 were required to register on their own.
In the U.S., men will be automatically registered for military service, reports the website "Duty Officer of America."
The draft registration database will be formed automatically, according to the U.S. Selective Service System (SSS). This registration for military service will be implemented starting in December 2026.
Previously, U.S. citizens and male immigrants aged 18 to 25 were required to register with the SSS on their own. The agency considered this process ineffective and costly.
Now, men will be automatically registered in the registry within 30 days after turning 18. The SSS emphasized that this measure was developed "in collaboration with Congress" and allocated $6 million for it.
Without being registered for military service, immigrants in the U.S. cannot apply for citizenship, and citizens, for example, cannot seek employment in federal government positions. Refusal to register or incitement to do so is punishable by a fine of $250,000 or a five-year prison sentence.
