The mayor of Nizhnekamsk, Radmir Belyaev, commented on the emergency, confirming that the explosion took place at one of the largest petrochemical enterprises in Russia and Europe. He stated that specialists have already begun to extinguish the fire.
Local residents claim that city sirens went off following the explosion. Local publications also report a fire in the area of the heat and power plant (CHPP).
After the explosion at the plant, residents of Nizhnekamsk began to complain about a chemical smell in the air. According to eyewitnesses, a column of smoke from the fire is visible from almost any part of the city. Also, almost immediately after the incident, the Federal Air Transport Agency introduced temporary restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft at the city's airport.
The Federal Air Transport Agency reported the suspension of operations at Nizhnekamsk airport "to ensure flight safety" — such restrictions are imposed due to the danger of drone attacks.
